Stratford sits in the Avon valley in the English Midlands, inland and sheltered, with mild damp winters and warm rather than hot summers. Rain can arrive in any month, and the river meadows and the Rec can flood after prolonged rain. Most of the sights are indoors or within a short walk of shelter.

The town holds its Shakespeare birthday party on the Saturday nearest 23 April, the boats are back on the Avon, and the Literary Festival runs each May.
Spring in Stratford has a fixed calendar. Shakespeare's Birthday Celebrations put a parade, a civic procession and a service at Holy Trinity into the streets on a Saturday in late April (it was Saturday 25 April in 2026, free, with roads shut in the town centre from early morning), so go for the atmosphere and leave the car at the Park and Ride. The Birthplace and Anne Hathaway's Cottage are on their longer summer hours from mid March, when the Trust's opening times run 10am to 5pm. The Literary Festival's spring edition is the first weekend of May in 2027 (6 to 9 May, tickets from February), and Avon Boating runs its hire and cruises through the season to the start of November. The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust lists skylarks and cowslips along the Stratford Greenway, which makes spring the season for it.
Peak season: book the play first and the dinner around it, take the free tower before matinees, and get on the river before the queue does.
June to September is Stratford at full volume. Henley Street fills by mid morning, the Birthplace runs timed entry and asks you to arrive within your slot, and Bancroft Gardens turns into the town's front lawn. The useful order of business is the play first, then dinner around the curtain: the Sheep Street restaurants keep pre-theatre menus and the Vintner will tell you frankly whether a 5pm table is a 7.15 turn. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre's tower is free from midday to 4pm except on matinee days or in bad weather, so go up before a two o'clock start or on a non-performance day. The Waterside Upmarket runs every Sunday from March to December and on Bank Holiday Mondays, and the Dirty Duck's riverside seats are worth arriving early for. Avon Boating cruises are walk-up from Bancroft Gardens, and the rowing boats are first come, first served.
The Mop Fair takes over the town centre in October, the Literary Festival follows at the end of the month, and the trust drops to shorter winter hours from 2 November.
October belongs to the Mop. The main fair runs on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 October in 2026, with Greenhill Street, Rother Street, Wood Street, Union Street, Bridge Street, Windsor Street, Meer Street, Henley Street and High Street closed from 00.01 on the Sunday, and the Runaway Mop follows on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October. It began as a hiring fair, where servants carried a mop head to show their trade, and it still takes over the town on the strength of charters going back to 1553. Plan around the closures, use the Park and Ride, and expect to pay per ride. The Literary Festival's autumn edition is 29 October to 1 November 2026. From 2 November the Birthplace and Anne Hathaway's Cottage close at 4pm, and Holy Trinity's opening hours thin out through September and October, so check them before you set off.
The Contemporary Arts Fair in November, big RSC shows over the holiday, and shorter hours at nearly every house.
Winter is the quiet Stratford and, for a lot of people, the better one. The Royal Shakespeare Company keeps playing through the holidays, with The Three Musketeers from 28 November and The Bear and the Piano from 11 December in the 2026 to 2027 season, and the theatre restaurants and the Sheep Street pre-theatre menus keep running. The Contemporary Arts Fair fills the Town Hall on Saturday 14 November. The Birthplace and Anne Hathaway's Cottage run to 4pm from 2 November, the Trust's listed hours end on 23 December, and Holy Trinity is open on Saturdays and Sundays only from November to March, so a weekday church visit is not possible then.
