About

A cobbled, steep fifteenth-century street often called one of the most photographed in England, lined with timber-framed houses including the so-called 'House with Two Front Doors' and 'House Opposite', and home to the historic Mermaid Inn, whose cellars date to 1156 beneath a building rebuilt in 1420. It is only a five-minute walk from top to bottom, but go early or late in the day, since it draws real crowds by mid-morning.

Highlights

  • One of the most photographed streets in England
  • Timber-framed 15th-century houses
  • The Mermaid Inn, with cellars dating to 1156
  • Cobbles underfoot, so wear sensible shoes

Tips

  • Visit early morning or early evening to see it without the day's coach parties.
  • Cobbles are uneven and the slope is steep; wear flat, sturdy shoes.
  • It connects directly into the wider old-town heritage walk.
