Pass of Killiecrankie

← All things to do

About

The wooded gorge of the River Garry north of town, run by the National Trust for Scotland, where the first shots of the Battle of Killiecrankie were fired on 27 July 1689. The famous spot is the Soldier's Leap, where, the Trust says, a Redcoat soldier jumped 18 feet across the river fleeing the Jacobites. The gorge is open every day, all year; the visitor centre and its cafe, which the Trust says is run independently by a local operator, open 10:00 to 17:00 (check winter dates with the National Trust for Scotland). It is a short drive north of town, and a good wet-day walk because the visitor centre is there to dry out in.
