Discover Keswick
Launches on Derwentwater, a stone circle on the hill, and fells that start at the end of the street
A market town at the foot of Skiddaw
Keswick is a market town of about 4,700 people (2021 census) at the north end of Derwentwater, with Skiddaw and Latrigg rising straight behind it and Blencathra to the north-east. The Market Square and its Moot Hall are the middle of it, and Thursday and Saturday are market days. Lake Road runs down past the pubs to the boat landings and the theatre.
It is a walking town first. Friar's Crag is a short level walk from the theatre, Latrigg is a short steep one from the car park at the head of Gale Road, the launch takes walkers across the lake to the foot of Catbells, and Castlerigg Stone Circle is about half an hour on foot from the centre by English Heritage's reckoning.
