About

A roofless round gun fort at the far end of the cobbled quay at Bayard's Cove, right on the edge of the old town. English Heritage, which looks after it, says the townspeople built it in the early 16th century to protect the town quay; contemporary documents suggest it may date from 1509 to 1510, and it was certainly standing by 1537, when a corporation lease called it the New Castle. It was the last line of defence for any ship that had got past the two castles and the chain at the river mouth. You can walk in at any reasonable time in daylight and look out through the gunports at the Lower Ferry and Kingswear. It can only be reached on foot, down steps from Southtown or along Bayard's Cove.
