One of Britain's great independent bookshops, on York Street beside the Abbey quarter: floor-to-ceiling shelves on library ladders, free tea and coffee among the books, and an events programme that brings major authors to Bath week in, week out. The Bath shop is the original of a small family of Topping shops (Edinburgh, Ely, St Andrews, York) and is open 08:30-21:00 every day including Sunday, with parts of the shop sometimes closing after 19:00 for evening author events; check the events page if visiting late. A bookshop worth planning an hour around, not a souvenir stop.
