1.5 km loop (longer north to Barnageeragh) · Negligible; level paths and boardwalk elevation

← All things to do

About

The signature Skerries walk, a flat loop of about 1.5 km around the headland of Red Island that links the South Strand esplanade with the harbour and North Beach. You pass the Martello tower, look out to Shenick and the islands, and can carry on north past the Springboards toward Barnageeragh Bay if you want a longer leg. Mostly level path and boardwalk, doable in trainers and any weather, and the single best way to understand how the town sits against the sea. Allow forty minutes for the loop, longer if you stop to watch the swimmers.

Highlights

  • Red Island headland and the Martello tower
  • Views to Shenick, Colt and St Patrick's islands
  • The Springboards swimming spots
  • Links South Strand, the harbour and North Beach

Tips

  • Start at the South Shore Esplanade car park, free parking alongside
  • Mostly level and buggy-friendly on the Red Island section
  • Carry on north past the Springers for a longer cliff-top leg to Barnageeragh
  • An any-weather walk; bring a jacket, the headland is exposed
