Midleton without a car

Plenty of Irish towns claim you do not need a car. Midleton is one of the few where it is straightforwardly true, provided you are clear about which parts of a visit are in the town and which are not. Here is the honest division.

Getting here

Iarnród Éireann's Cork commuter service runs from Cork Kent and terminates at Midleton. Journey time is 23 minutes and through the middle of a weekday it goes roughly every half hour. Because it is a terminus, the train empties when it arrives and there is no station to miss.

One thing to watch at Kent: the same line branches at Glounthaune, with some trains going to Cobh and some to Midleton, and they share the first few stations. Check the destination on the front of the train before boarding rather than assuming.

Note also that this is a Commuter service, not the DART. The DART is a Dublin network. If a guide tells you to take the DART to Midleton, it does not know what it is talking about.

Coming from Cork Airport there is no direct bus. You go airport to Cork city, then either the train from Kent or a Bus Éireann service out to Midleton, and you should allow about an hour and a quarter including the connection. A taxi from the terminal is 35 to 45 minutes depending on how the city is moving.

What you can walk to

Midleton station is on Mill Road, about ten minutes on foot from Main Street. From there, on foot:

• The Midleton Distillery Experience, on Distillery Walk just off Main Street. Five minutes.
• The Saturday farmers market on Park Street. Five minutes.
• Every restaurant in this guide except the two out-of-town hotels. Main Street, The Square and Distillery Walk are all within a few minutes of each other.
• Kindred Spirits in Bailick Park, at the south end of the town. About fifteen minutes from the centre.
• Ballyannan Wood, further south again on the estuary. A longer walk, but walkable.
• The greenway, whose trailhead is literally the station car park.

That is a full day, arguably two, without ever sitting in a car.

What genuinely needs a car

This is where visitors get caught, usually because a listing site files an East Cork venue under Midleton without saying how far away it is. Be clear:

• Ballymaloe House and the Ballymaloe Cookery School are at Shanagarry, not in Midleton. The owners' own directions put the entrance about 3km beyond Cloyne village, which works out at roughly 12km southeast of the town by road. There is no useful public transport.
• Cloyne, with its round tower and cathedral, is about 8km south. Bus Éireann's 240 and 241 pass through East Cork, so a bus is possible, but check the timetable carefully before relying on it.
• Castlemartyr is about 7km east.
• Ballycotton and the coast are further again.

If those are the reason you are coming to East Cork, hire a car. If the distillery, the market, the greenway and the food are the reason, do not bother.

Where to stay, and the naming trap

There is one hotel of any size in the town itself: Talbot Hotel Midleton on the Old Cork Road, 82 bedrooms with a pool and gym, a short walk from the centre. Book it under that name. It was the Midleton Park Hotel and a great many listings, including official tourism ones, still call it that. Its old web address now redirects to the new one.

Beyond that, the accommodation is out in the county, which tells you something true about the place: Midleton is a market town with an attraction in it, not a resort. Castlemartyr Resort is about 7km east and Ballymaloe House about 12km southeast at Shanagarry. Both are excellent and both need a car.

Opening days, the thing that ruins plans

Midleton's restaurants keep tight patterns and they are not the same as each other. Cush is closed Monday and Tuesday. Ferrit & Lee is closed Sunday and Monday. Wallis' Bar is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and opens at 4pm otherwise. BóBurger is closed Monday and Tuesday. The Granary is closed Sunday and Monday. If you are coming on a Monday, check every single venue before you travel, because a surprising number of them will be shut.
