About
Muckross Abbey is a remarkably complete Franciscan friary founded in 1448, set in the park near Muckross House and reached on foot or by jaunting car. Its great curiosity is the central cloister, built around a vast old yew tree that has grown to fill the courtyard, and the building is otherwise roofless and atmospheric, with old graves and a spiral stair you can climb. It is unsupervised and free, and quietly one of the most evocative spots in the whole park.
