Carrauntoohil & the MacGillycuddy's Reeks

← All things to do

About

Carrauntoohil, at 1,038 metres, is the highest mountain in Ireland and the high point of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, the country's only range with three peaks over a thousand metres. The usual ascent starts from Cronin's Yard or Lisleibane, about a thirty-minute drive west of Killarney, and the best-known route climbs the Devil's Ladder. It is a serious mountain day of six to ten hours over rough, steep and exposed ground, with fast-changing weather, and inexperienced walkers should go with a guide. This is a day-trip from the town rather than a stroll in the park.

Highlights

  • The summit of Carrauntoohil, the highest point in Ireland
  • The MacGillycuddy's Reeks, the only Irish range with three 1,000 m peaks
  • Wild, remote mountain scenery above the lakes
  • Trailheads at Cronin's Yard and Lisleibane, a short drive from town

Tips

  • A serious mountain: proper boots, navigation, food and a weather check are essential.
  • Inexperienced walkers should hire a local guide rather than go alone.
  • Start early and turn back if the cloud comes down; the ground is steep and exposed.
