About

Killaloe's swimming spot: a lawn running down to a short stretch of lakeshore with a jetty and a lifeguard hut, about 4.6km north on the R463 on the Clare side, spelled Ballycuggaran by Waterways Ireland and Ballycuggeran on the Blue Flag list. It is on the An Taisce Blue Flag list for the 2026 bathing season, which ran 1 June to 15 September, managed by Clare County Council, and Waterways Ireland says it is lifeguard patrolled in the summer season. The water is Lough Derg, so it is cold even in August and a wetsuit is no shame. The same car park area is the start of the Crag Wood walk into the hills, which Waterways Ireland puts at about 7km.
