Kilkenny Castle
About
The castle has stood over the bend of the Nore since the 12th century, first as an Anglo-Norman stronghold and for nearly six hundred years as the seat of the Butler family. The restored State Rooms run you through the grand interiors, with the Long Gallery and its painted timber roof and the family portraits the obvious highlight. Outside, the 50 acres of parkland are free to walk and locals treat them as the city's back garden, good for a lap before or after the tour.
