Black Abbey

← All things to do

About

Founded in 1225, the Black Abbey is a Dominican priory and still an active church, which is part of what makes it worth the detour off the main mile. Locals call it the Black Abbey for the black cappa the Dominicans wear over their white habits. The Gothic architecture and the stained glass are the draw, including the large rose window, and because it is a working church rather than a ticketed site it has an atmosphere the busier attractions lack.
