About

Cross the Wolfe Tone Bridge from the centre and you are in the Claddagh, said to be the oldest fishing village in Ireland. It was once self-governing, with its own King of the Claddagh, and kept its own ways long after the city grew up around it. The old thatched village was cleared in the 1930s, but this is the birthplace of the Claddagh ring, the two hands holding a crowned heart for friendship, love and loyalty. It is a ten-minute stroll from the centre, good for watching the swans and looking back at the city across the water.
