Enniscrone Castle (O'Dowd's Castle)
← All things to do
About
The gaunt ruin standing on the Carrowhubbuck ridge above Killala Bay, known locally as Nolan's Castle, Field Castle or O'Dowd's Castle. What survives is an early 17th-century fortified house, raised on the site of an earlier O'Dowd fortification that local tradition dates to the close of the 14th century and that is documented at Enniscrone by 1417. Two of its original four corner towers remain. The ridge also carries Neolithic tombs and a ringfort, so it has been a place of habitation and burial for thousands of years. The castle is a Recorded Monument currently undergoing conservation, so respect any fencing on site, and note that adjoining land is privately owned.
