About
The Blasket Centre at Dún Chaoin, about 16km west of Dingle at the very end of the peninsula, tells the story of the Great Blasket Island and the remarkable community of Irish-speaking writers it produced before it was abandoned in 1953. The building itself is striking, a long modern gallery pointing out at the islands, and the exhibition on the islanders and their books, Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers, Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, is among the best of its kind in the country. It is OPW-run, open spring to autumn. From nearby Dunquin Pier, separate privately run ferries cross to the Great Blasket itself in season, weather permitting.
