Accessibility

Abbey

The abbey ruins and the path to the Monks' Fishing House are grass, gravel and uneven stone, with steps and no handrails. The Office of Public Works lists this as an unguided site and warns visitors to take care.

Cong Woods

Forest roads in Cong Woods are wide and mostly level but unsurfaced and often wet.

Individual venues here do not publish accessibility details. Ashford Castle and The Lodge at Ashford Castle both publish accessibility pages on their own sites.

ATMs & Banking

Cash in Cong

Main Street

Varies

Cong has no bank branch and no ATM we could confirm with an operator. Draw cash in Ballinrobe, Headford or Galway before you arrive rather than relying on finding a machine here. Cards are taken in the hotels, pubs and the Spar.

Bike Rental

Bike hire in Cong

The village community guide says bikes can be hired locally but names no operator, and we could not find one with a current listing. Ask at your accommodation.

Information

No GP practice in Cong village was verified in this research pass. Ballinrobe (17 km, about 26 minutes by road) is the nearest town with practices. Out of hours in Co. Mayo, the GP co-operative WestDoc covers the area; phone your own GP's number first for the diverted line, or 112 in an emergency.

Cong is not on the coast, so there is no Coast Guard station here, but Lough Corrib and Lough Mask are large, cold and open water with a genuine drowning record. If someone is in trouble on either lake, ring 112 and ask for the Coast Guard, which coordinates inland water rescue in Ireland as well as marine.

Golf

Ashford Castle Golf Course

Ashford Castle Estate, Cong, Co. Galway

Not published online; enquire with the hotel

A nine-hole parkland course of 2,996 yards, par 35, laid out by the Irish architect Eddie Hackett inside the estate. Access is an estate matter rather than a public booking, so ring the hotel on +353 94 954 6003. Note that the course sits on the County Galway side of the estate.

Parking

Abbey Street and Main Street, Cong

Free

On-street parking in the village is free and unmetered, and it fills by late morning in July and August.

Cong village car park (by the Dry Canal)

Free

The larger car park on the way out of the village toward the canal. This is the sensible place to leave a car for the abbey, the woods and the Quiet Man walking tour.

Ashford Castle visitor car park

Private

Pet-Friendly Info

Cong Woods

Coillte's Cong Forest is open to walkers with dogs on a lead. Sport Ireland's trail record for the Cong Nature Trail also records dogs on a lead.

Abbey

Cong Abbey is an unfenced state national monument in the middle of the village; keep dogs on a lead around the ruins and the graveyard.

Venues

Several village pubs are dog-friendly in the bar area in practice, but none of them publish a policy. Ring ahead rather than assume.
