Old Church Cemetery: Lusitania Graves
About
The Old Church Cemetery, above the town on the road out toward Cork, holds the mass graves of the Lusitania dead, buried here after the ship was sunk off the Old Head of Kinsale on 7 May 1915. A mass funeral was held on 10 May 1915, and many of the victims lie in three communal graves with a memorial. It is a sombre, free heritage site, a place of real bereavement rather than an attraction, and worth the walk up for visitors who want to understand what the harbour carried.
