Lusitania Peace Memorial
About
The Lusitania Peace Memorial stands in Casement Square in the centre of the town. The Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine off the Old Head of Kinsale on 7 May 1915, with the loss of 1,197 lives; the survivors and the dead were brought in to Queenstown, and many of the victims were buried above the town in the Old Church Cemetery. The memorial, a bronze figure of the Angel of Peace over two grieving fishermen, was begun in the 1930s and completed in 1968. A free, sober public monument to one of the disasters this harbour holds.
