Half a Day: Titanic, the Cathedral and the Waterfront

3-4 hoursYear-round

The half-day that gives you the heart of Cobh without a ferry crossing: the Titanic story in the building it happened in, the climb to the cathedral and the Deck of Cards, and a feed on the waterfront. Easy to do off the train from Cork, and good in any weather.

    The Titanic Experience

Start at the Titanic Experience on Casement Square, in the original White Star Line office where 123 passengers boarded in 1912. Book a slot ahead, especially on a cruise-ship day. You leave knowing the fate of the passenger on your boarding card.

    Coffee at Seasalt

Cross the square to Seasalt Café & Deli for a coffee and a bite before the climb. It is the daytime spot locals use, and a good fuel stop.

St Colman's Cathedral and the Deck of Cards

Climb up to St Colman's Cathedral, the tallest spire in Ireland, and step inside to see the home of the only carillon in the country. On the way back down, take in the West View terrace, the Deck of Cards houses under the spire, and the long view down over the harbour.

    Lunch on the waterfront

Back down to the waterfront for lunch at Jacob's Ladder in the WatersEdge Hotel, looking out over the harbour and the deepwater quay, or a harbour-front table at the Titanic Bar & Grill. Then the train back to Cork is a short walk away.

A Full Day: Spike Island and the Town

Full dayYear-round

The full Cobh day, built around the Spike Island ferry out into the harbour, with the emigration story, the Titanic and the waterfront filling the rest. Book the ferry ahead in summer, and pick a settled day, since a strong southwesterly can cancel the sailing.
