Omey Island

About

A tidal island off Claddaghduff, around 14km northwest of Clifden, reached only at low tide on foot or by car across Omey Strand. The sand is exposed for a few hours either side of low water, and marker posts show the safe line; outside that window the crossing is dangerous and you can be cut off. On the island are the ruins of St Feichin's medieval church, beaches and a small lake. Always check the tide times before you cross.

Highlights

  • The tidal sand crossing from Claddaghduff at low water
  • St Feichin's medieval church ruins on the island
  • Quiet beaches and a small lake
  • A genuine working tidal island, not an all-time crossing

Tips

  • Check the tide times before you go and only cross within the safe low-tide window; follow the marker posts.
  • Do not be caught on the island by the incoming tide, which covers the strand quickly.
