About

The Slieve Foye Loop starts at the tourist office and harbour car park in the village and climbs through forest and along the forest edge onto open mountain, coming back down into Carlingford. Sport Ireland grades it strenuous, at 9.8km with about 270 metres of ascent and around two and a half hours walking, waymarked with a blue arrow on a white background. The surface changes constantly: tarmac, forestry road, grassy track and mountain path, with one rough section that goes boggy after rain. It does not take in the 590-metre summit of Slieve Foye itself, which is a harder proposition off the waymarked route. What it does deliver is the view: north along the coast, south along the coast, and across the lough to the mountains on the far shore, with the Isle of Man visible in genuinely good conditions. Dogs are not permitted. Storm damage and diversions have been in place on this route, so check before you set out.

Highlights

  • Views north and south along the coast and across the lough from open mountain
  • Waymarked with a blue arrow on a white background, starting from the harbour car park
  • Forest, forest edge and open mountain in one 9.8km loop
  • The Isle of Man is visible from here in good conditions

Tips

  • Storm damage and diversions have been in place on this trail; check Sport Ireland's trail page before setting out.
  • Boots, not trainers. One section is rough and goes boggy after rain.
  • Dogs are not permitted on this trail.
  • The waymarked loop does not summit Slieve Foye. The summit is a separate and harder undertaking.
