Village
Carlingford's medieval core has narrow footpaths, cobbled and setted surfaces in the laneways, and a slope from the harbour up into the village, so it is hard going for wheelchairs and buggies in places. Newry Street and Market Street have footpaths; the alleys between them mostly do not.
Castle
King John's Castle is a ruined stone castle on a rock above the harbour, reached by steps and uneven ground, and is not step-free.
Greenway
The Carlingford Lough Greenway is the most accessible thing to do here: a sealed, mostly flat off-road path from the marina toward Omeath, usable with a wheelchair or a buggy, with one short section on a public road.

Newry Street and Market Street area, Carlingford
Carlingford has no bank branch. A cash machine is mapped in the village centre and Cooley Credit Union has a village office, but neither was confirmed on the ground or from an operator source in this research pass. Draw cash in Dundalk before coming out if you need it, and expect some smaller businesses to prefer card anyway.

Carlingford Lough is an international waterway with the Republic on the southern shore and the United Kingdom on the northern shore, so give your position clearly.

Daisy Hill Hospital, 5 Hospital Road, Newry, Co. Down, BT35 8DR, is the nearest Emergency Department to Carlingford, about 20 km and 22 minutes by road north through Omeath on the R173. It is open 24 hours a day, every day, for all ages, and is run by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. Newry is across the border in Northern Ireland, a different jurisdiction with its own health service, but emergency treatment there is free at the point of use for a visitor and 112 and 999 both work on either side of the border. The nearest Emergency Department inside the Republic is Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Windmill Road, Moneymore, Drogheda, Co. Louth, A92 VW28, which is open 24 hours a day for all ages but is about 60 km and 47 minutes south by the R173 and M1. For a minor injury rather than an emergency, the Dundalk Injury Unit at Louth County Hospital, Dublin Road, Dundalk, A91 X0DP, phone 042 938 5423, is closer at about 26 km and 28 minutes, open 9:00 to 20:00 every day except Christmas Day, for anyone aged 5 and over. The injury unit treats limb fractures, sprains, minor burns, wounds and minor head injuries in conscious patients, and charges €75 unless you have a medical card or a referral. It does not treat chest, abdominal, pelvic, spine or serious head injuries.

Carlingford sits on the border, and that changes where the nearest help is. The closest Emergency Department is over the border in Newry, about 22 minutes away; the closest one inside the Republic is nearly an hour away in Drogheda. It is worth knowing both before you need either. Dial 112 or 999 from anywhere around the lough: both numbers are free from any phone and work on either shore. If an ambulance is coming, let the crew choose the hospital. If you are calling from the water, say which side of the lough you are on, because the northern shore is served by different emergency services.
Luggage Storage
There is no left-luggage facility in Carlingford. Hotels and guesthouses will normally hold bags on arrival and departure days; ask at reception.
Parking
Tourist Office and harbour car park, Station House
The car park beside the tourist office at Station House on the Greenore road, by the harbour, is the standard place to leave a car for the village and is the official start point for the Slieve Foye Loop and the Tain Way. It fills on summer weekends and festival days. Charging arrangements were not confirmed in this pass; check the signage on arrival.
Tholsel Street car park
A second car park inside the village off Tholsel Street, a short walk from the pubs and restaurants. Small, and the first to fill at weekends. Charging arrangements were not confirmed in this pass.
Carlingford Marina car park

About 1.3km north of the village and the natural place to start the greenway to Omeath. Rate as published by a greenway guide rather than by the marina itself; confirm on the day.
Pet-Friendly Info
Trails
Dogs are not permitted on the Slieve Foye Loop, and the Tain Way passes through farmland where dogs are not allowed either. The Carlingford Lough Greenway is the dog-friendly option, on a lead.
Pubs
Several pubs and beer gardens in the village are dog-friendly in outdoor areas; ask at the door rather than assuming.

Carlingford's retail is boutiques, gift and craft shops, a goldsmith's workshop, a butcher, a sweet shop and a couple of convenience stores, mostly along Newry Street, Market Street and Tholsel Street. There is no supermarket or department store; Dundalk covers that.

Local taxi operators
There is no taxi rank in Carlingford. Local operators cover the village and the run to and from Dundalk, which is the connection most visitors need if they arrive by train. Book ahead, especially on Friday and Saturday nights when the group trade takes most of the local capacity, and agree the fare when you call. No individual operator was verified to this project's standard in this pass.

Pubs, cafes and accommodation in the village
Most pubs, cafes, hotels and guesthouses in Carlingford offer free WiFi to customers and guests. Mobile coverage is fine in the village and along the greenway but drops on the upper slopes of Slieve Foye. Note that your phone may pick up a network from across the lough and roam onto a United Kingdom operator; check your settings before making calls or using data on the shore.
SIM Cards
There is no phone shop in Carlingford. Buy a prepaid Irish SIM in Dundalk or at Dublin Airport before you arrive. A tourist SIM with data typically costs around €20. If you are driving up from Dublin, do not wait until you are on the peninsula.
