About

A short ferry crossing from Bantry pier out to Whiddy Island, the large island that shelters Bantry Bay's inner harbour. The island carries the scars of the 1979 Betelgeuse oil tanker disaster, which killed 49 people, alongside quieter walking trails, WWI airstrip remains and a Napoleonic-era battery. The Bank House is the island's only pub. A genuine step away from the mainland without much of a journey.

Tips

  • Confirm the current ferry timetable at whiddy.ie before travelling, as sailings are lighter outside summer.
