The Dolmen of the Four Maols

← All things to do

About

Known locally as the Table of the Giants, the Dolmen of the Four Maols is a megalithic tomb on a low rise near the railway station, a capstone resting on uprights that has stood for thousands of years. Local tradition ties it to the Four Maols, foster-brothers said to have murdered a bishop and been executed for it, though the tomb is far older than that story. It is a small, free, easily missed thing, but a genuine piece of deep prehistory a few minutes from the town centre, and a reminder of how long the ford at Ballina has mattered.
