Accessibility

Town

Athlone town centre is mostly flat with footpaths on the main streets on both banks, linked by a bridge with pedestrian crossings, so getting between the Left Bank and the east-bank centre on foot is straightforward, though some older buildings have a step at the door; check with the venue.

Castle

Athlone Castle's visitor centre is closed for redevelopment through 2026, with reopening expected in spring 2027; accessibility of the reopened centre is not yet known and should be confirmed nearer the time.

Greenway

The Old Rail Trail Greenway is a surfaced, mostly flat former railway line, suitable for wheelchairs and buggies for at least its early stretches out of Athlone, though check current surface conditions for the full 43 km run to Mullingar.

For venue-level access, contact each place directly. The main obstacles are steps into some older buildings and the general scale of a bigger town centre to cross on foot.

ATMs & Banking

Bank and ATM provision in the town centre

Church Street, Main Street and Golden Island, Athlone

Various

Athlone has full bank and ATM provision for a town of its size, spread across the town centre and the Golden Island retail area. Confirm specific machine locations on the ground.

Emergency Services

General Emergency

112 or 999

Coast Guard

Athlone sits on the inland, non-tidal Shannon and Lough Ree rather than the sea. For a water incident on the river or the lake, dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard, who coordinate inland waterway rescue in Ireland.

Garda Station

Athlone Garda Station, Barrack Street, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, N37 XE33, +353 90 649 8550.

Portiuncula University Hospital, Garbally Demesne, Dunlo, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, H53 T971. 24-hour Emergency Department, all ages, about 28 km and roughly 25 to 30 minutes west of Athlone via the N6. Athlone has no Emergency Department of its own. The alternative to the east is Regional Hospital Mullingar, also a 24-hour Emergency Department for all ages, about 50 km and roughly 45 to 50 minutes away via the N6 and N52. In a life-threatening emergency dial 112 or 999 and let the dispatcher route you.

Midoc Athlone (out-of-hours GP)

Clonbrusk Primary Care Centre, Clonbrusk, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, N37 P8P8

1800 302 702

Out-of-hours urgent GP service for all ages, by appointment after a phone triage call; not an emergency department.

Midoc covers Athlone when daytime GP surgeries are closed: weeknights from 6pm to 8am, and 24 hours at weekends and on public holidays. Phone first, it is not a walk-in service. For routine daytime care use an Athlone GP surgery during opening hours. Athlone has no acute hospital of its own; the nearest 24-hour Emergency Departments are Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe, about 28 km west, and Regional Hospital Mullingar, about 50 km east.

For a broken bone, sprain, minor burn or minor head injury, Roscommon Injury Unit is often the faster option: Roscommon University Hospital, Athlone Road, Ardsallagh Beg, Roscommon, F42 AX61, +353 90 663 2212, open 8am to 8pm seven days a week for patients aged 5 and over, about 33 km from Athlone. It is an injury unit, not an Emergency Department, and it is not open 24 hours. Attending an Emergency Department costs €100 without a medical card or GP referral. When GP surgeries are closed, Midoc is the out-of-hours urgent GP service on 1800 302 702 (phone first, appointment only).

Luggage Storage

There is no dedicated left-luggage office confirmed in Athlone. Most accommodation will hold bags on the day of arrival or departure; ask directly. Athlone railway station has lockers available through the Lockers2Rent scheme.

Parking

Town-centre and Golden Island parking

Pay And Display and retail car parks

Rate: Confirm current rates locally

Athlone has a mix of on-street pay-and-display parking in the town centre and larger car parks at the Golden Island and N6 Centre retail areas. It is a bigger, busier town than most on this site, so allow time to find a space on a market Saturday or during the River Festival.

Supermarkets & Groceries

Town-centre and Golden Island supermarkets

Athlone, Co. Westmeath

🕐Daily; confirm hours locally

Taxis & Rideshare

Local taxi firms

Athlone is served by several local taxi firms and a rank at the railway station, being a bigger midlands hub than most towns on this site. Booking ahead is still wise on a Friday or Saturday night and around festival weekends.

WiFi & Connectivity

Pubs, cafes and accommodation

Free

Most pubs, cafes, restaurants and accommodation in Athlone offer free WiFi for customers and guests. Mobile coverage is generally good in the town, being a rail and road hub, though it can be patchier out on Lough Ree and the quieter stretches of the Old Rail Trail Greenway.

SIM Cards

Athlone has phone shops for the main Irish networks (Three, Vodafone, Eir) in the town centre and Golden Island, so a prepaid tourist SIM is easy to pick up on arrival rather than needing to plan ahead, unlike many smaller Irish towns.
