Getting to Achill Island
How to reach Achill Island by train, bus, car, or bicycle.
Rail (nearest stations)
There is no train station on Achill Island itself. The nearest stations are Westport and Castlebar, both on the Dublin Heuston to Westport/Ballina Iarnrod Eireann line, roughly an hour or more from Achill by connecting bus or car. Achill is a day-trip-by-rail-plus-bus destination, not a direct rail destination: plan the last leg by bus or taxi.

Bus Eireann Route 450 runs from Westport to Achill, serving Achill Sound, Keel and on to Dooagh, and continues to Louisburgh; check current timetables directly as schedules are subject to change. Local Link Route 460a connects Achill Sound to Castlebar. A newer TFI Anseo on-demand minibus service, launched in 2025, covers local hops within Achill and the neighbouring Curraun peninsula, extending to Mulranny, and requires booking at least two hours ahead via its app.

Driving
Achill is reached by road only, over the Michael Davitt Bridge at Achill Sound; there is no ferry. It is around a four-hour drive from Dublin or from Shannon Airport, and five to six hours from Belfast. Once on the island, the R319 runs the length of it out to Keel and Dooagh, with the single-track Atlantic Drive looping the southern coast.

Tips
- •There is no ferry crossing to Achill; it is a bridge crossing only, so do not build a ferry timetable into your plans.
- •The Atlantic Drive is single-track with passing places; allow extra time and drive slowly.
- •Fuel up before the western end of the island; options thin out past Keel.
Cycling
The Great Western Greenway, built on the old Westport to Achill railway line, now reaches onto the island itself: a 5km paved extension added in 2023 runs from Achill Sound to Cashel, flat and traffic-free. Bike hire is based mainly in Westport, so cyclists doing the full mainland-to-island route typically hire there rather than on Achill.

Leap Card
Leap Card is accepted on scheduled Bus Eireann services including Route 450, so it can be used for the Westport to Achill run. Acceptance on the newer TFI Anseo on-demand minibus and Local Link services should be confirmed directly, as rural on-demand services do not always integrate with Leap in the same way as scheduled routes.
