Loch Ness from Inverness: which boats actually leave from here
Jacobite's three departure points, from the bus station on Margaret Street to Dochgarroch Lock and Clansman Harbour, its five tours and prices, and what to check before you book.
A lot of people book a bed in Inverness because it is the city nearest to Loch Ness, then discover that the loch is not in Inverness at all. The River Ness and the Caledonian Canal run south-west out of the city towards it, and most of the boats you see advertised start somewhere along that line. Before you pay for anything, work out where your boat actually leaves from and how you will get there.
The operator that starts in town: Jacobite
Jacobite is the operator we found that runs a Loch Ness trip from the city centre itself. Its site lists three departure points:
- Inverness Bus Station, Margaret Street, IV1 1LT, a few minutes' walk from the train station.
- Dochgarroch Lock, IV3 8JG, on the Caledonian Canal, about 7 km south-west of the centre by our measurement. This is also the company's address.
- Clansman Harbour, at Brackla, IV3 8LA, on the loch itself.
Only one of the five tours on its tours page leaves from the bus station. The rest start at Dochgarroch or Clansman Harbour, so check the departure point on your ticket.
The five tours
These are the tours and from-prices on Jacobite's tours page on 11 October 2026. Prices are labelled "from", not as adult fares, so read the booking page for your party.
From the bus station
Temptation, about three and a half hours, from £54. It is a coach, a cruise and Urquhart Castle. Its listing on GetYourGuide, where the activity provider is named as Jacobite Loch Ness Cruises, says to go to stance number 7 at the bus station, and lists Urquhart Castle entry tickets among what is included. If you do not have a car, this is the simple way to see the loch and the castle in a morning or afternoon.
From Dochgarroch Lock
Enchantment, 50 minutes, from £21, and Contemplation, two hours, from £29. Both are listed as canal and loch trips: you start on the Caledonian Canal and head out onto the loch. Dochgarroch is the nearest departure point to the city, but you still need to get there. Jacobite's pages do not describe a bus to the lock, so check Traveline Scotland before you rely on public transport, or drive.
From Clansman Harbour
Inspiration, 50 minutes, from £21, is a loch trip. Freedom, two hours, from £33, is listed as a loch and castle trip. These start on the loch.
Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle sits on the shore of Loch Ness, not in Inverness. If you want it, the Temptation tour includes entry, according to its GetYourGuide listing, and Freedom from Clansman Harbour is listed by Jacobite as a castle trip. Read what is included before you book, because a cruise that sails past the castle is not the same as one that lets you land.
Seasons and timing
Jacobite's tours page does not state a season for each tour, so check the operator's booking calendar for your date rather than assuming year-round sailings. Dress for wind on the water. In summer, pack midge spray: a local at Simpsons Garden Centre gave exactly that tip to the tourism body's Learn from the Locals series, and the canal side at Dochgarroch is where you will want it.
Afternoon tea and the canal
Jacobite also runs afternoon tea at its An Talla cafe, according to its site. A local on the Inverness subreddit recommended An Talla for breakfast, describing it as a short drive or bus ride out along the canal. If you are starting from Dochgarroch, it is worth asking the operator whether the cafe is at your departure point before you plan a meal around it.
Checking an operator before you book
- Find the departure point on the operator's own site, not on a reseller's map.
- Check whether a coach from Inverness is included.
- Check whether castle entry is included or extra.
- Look at the date on any review or blog post that recommends a boat. Fleets and timetables change.
If you would rather stay in town
You do not have to go to the loch to see the water that comes out of it. The River Ness flows through the city, and the Ness Islands, about a kilometre and a half upstream from the Ness Bridge, are free and always open. Our river guide covers the walk. For the Loch Ness Marathon, which finishes in Inverness after starting on the south side of the loch, see the events page: in 2026 it was on Sunday 27 September, and the organiser has announced Sunday 26 September 2027.
