The cafe on the castle's ground floor, free to walk into without a castle ticket. Big windows look over the lawn, there are deckchairs outside in summer and the open fire is lit in winter. Brunch runs 10 to 11.30am and lunch from noon to 3pm, with drinks and cake all day; the sample menu has a Welsh rarebit, a lamb burger with minted yoghurt and a San Marzano tomato soup. It is open seven days, 10am to 4pm, and run by Epicure for the Trust. Dogs on a lead are welcome. Book a table by phone.

Hay Castle Trust: an accessible toilet on the ground floor near the cafe; disabled bays at the top of the Oxford Road car park with level access across the zebra crossing and a ramp at the top of the castle drive. Contact the Trust to arrange special access.
