Weather & What to Bring

Weather

Bourton sits low in the Windrush valley, well below Stow-on-the-Wold four miles up the road, which the village visitor site puts at nearly 800 feet. The river and the meadows around it hold the damp, and the riverside paths and the field walks get muddy after rain.

Packing Checklist

  • ✓Waterproof jacket (essential year-round)
  • ✓Layers: temperature can change quickly
  • ✓Comfortable walking shoes
  • ✓Camera: the views are worth it
  • ✓Sunscreen: yes, even in United Kingdom

Best Time to Visit

Spring

March - May

The Model Village moves to its summer hours (10am to 5.30pm) when the clocks go forward. Greystones' wildflower meadows are at their best from May, and the Wildlife Trust says the orchids flower in May and early June.

Spring is the best time to see the river before the summer crowds arrive. The willows on the green come into leaf, the Model Village switches to its British Summer Time hours of 10am to 5.30pm, and bank holiday weekends fill the car parks quickly, as the village visitor site warns. Greystones, the Wildlife Trust's farm on the edge of the village, keeps its meadow walk closed through the wet months and opens it again depending on water levels; its own page says May to September is the best time to visit and that early marsh, southern marsh and common spotted orchids flower in the meadows in May and early June.

Summer

June - August

Football in the River on August Bank Holiday Monday (expected on 30 August in 2027; the club had not announced it in October 2026). The Dragonfly Maze sells a limited number of time slots on the day and says it can sell out by mid-afternoon on bank holidays.

Summer is when the village visitor site says Bourton can be as busy as any seaside resort, and on hot weekends the banks of the Windrush fill with families and children paddling in the shallows. Arrive before 10am or after 4pm if you can. August Bank Holiday Monday is Football in the River, when Bourton Rovers put goalposts in the Windrush and two teams of club players play a match of around half an hour in ankle-deep water, with spectators on the bridges and banks. The Dragonfly Maze sells its time slots on the day from the kiosk and warns that on bank holidays they can sell out by mid-afternoon.

Autumn

September - November

The Model Village goes to winter hours (10am to 3.30pm) when the clocks go back. The Old New Inn's 2026 Beaujolais Nouveau night: Thursday 19 November.

Autumn thins the crowds, and the walk across the fields to Lower Slaughter is at its best before the paths get heavy. When the clocks go back the Model Village closes at 3.30pm instead of 5.30pm, and Bakery on the Water shuts an hour earlier. The Motoring Museum, under cover in the old mill, opens daily from 10am to 6pm. The Old New Inn's Beaujolais Nouveau night, 2026 date: Thursday 19 November.

Winter

December - February

Birdland closes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day only, and the Model Village on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The Christmas tree stands in the river in December.

Winter is the quiet season, and the Model Village keeps its winter hours of 10am to 3.30pm and shuts if it snows. At Christmas a tree stands in the middle of the Windrush with its lights reflected in the water, as the Mousetrap Inn describes it, and the parish council organises the village lights switch-on; the 2026 date had not been published when this guide was written. Birdland is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and its penguins are fed daily at 11am and 3pm whatever the weather.
