Getting to Bourton without a car, and parking if you bring one

No station in Bourton: Kingham is nearer but has no bus, Moreton-in-Marsh has the 801. The car parks, the coach rules and how to avoid the crowds.

By TravelPlan.guide·

Bourton has no railway station. It had one, on Station Road, until 1962; the Old New Inn's notes on its Model Village record that it served the line between Cheltenham and Moreton-in-Marsh. These days you come by road, and how you do that decides how your day goes.

By train and bus

Two stations on the Cotswold Line, which runs from London Paddington, are within reach. Kingham is the nearer, about 9 kilometres away in a straight line and 12 by road, but there is no bus from it to Bourton. The village visitor site says you need a pre-booked taxi from Kingham, and that the ride takes about 20 minutes. Book it before you get on the train.

Moreton-in-Marsh is about 13 kilometres away by road, and it is the station with a bus. The Pulhams 801 stops at a stop the timetable calls Moreton-in-Marsh Rail Station, about 70 metres from the station itself, and runs through Stow-on-the-Wold to Bourton. On the timetable valid from 3 May 2026 the journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on which Bourton stop you want, and buses run roughly hourly through the day. Pulhams added later evening journeys from that date for people coming off evening trains: the last bus from Moreton station leaves at 9.40pm Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and public holidays the service is hourly all year, but the last bus from Moreton station leaves at 6.45pm.

The visitor site gives the train from Paddington to either station as about an hour and a half to two hours. The other way in is Cheltenham. Trains run to Cheltenham Spa, but the 801 leaves from Royal Well bus station in the town centre, which the visitor site says is about 20 minutes' walk from the station; it suggests the D bus or a taxi between the two. From Royal Well the 801 takes about 45 minutes to Bourton, and it stops outside the A&E at Cheltenham General Hospital on the way.

Where the bus stops in the village

The 801 timetable names five stops in Bourton: the Edinburgh Wool Shop and the Newsagent on the High Street, the Moore Hospital, the Cotswold Academy and the Pulhams depot, at the business park where the buses are kept. For the river and the green, use the High Street stops. Stow is 15 to 20 minutes away on the same bus, which makes a car-free half day out of the village easy.

By car

The village sits just east of the A429, the Roman Fosse Way, between Stow and Cirencester. The visitor site's advice is to turn off at the traffic lights onto Station Road, ignoring the satnav if you are coming up from the south, and follow the signs to the car parks. There are two big pay and display car parks, open all year. Station Road (GL54 2EN), behind the petrol station, takes coins, cards or the PayByPhone app and has no Blue Badge concession. Rissington Road (GL54 2BN), run by Cotswold District Council, takes cards or PayByPhone only; Blue Badge holders park free there, motorbikes are free, and there are 14 electric vehicle bays. Download the app before you arrive.

Both fill fast on bank holidays and sunny weekends. Do not solve that by parking on residential streets. The visitor site asks visitors to be thoughtful to residents, and it is worth knowing that around 4,000 people live here and have to get in and out of their own roads on the busiest days.

Coaches and crowds

Coaches are not allowed on the High Street at any time, and the visitor site publishes separate drop-off, pick-up and parking arrangements for coach groups. The crowds are the other thing to plan around. The visitor site is frank that on holidays and sunny weekends Bourton can be as bustling as any seaside resort, and that as a rule of thumb the earlier or later in the day you come, the quieter it is. An 8am pastry by the river, or a walk on the green after the day visitors have gone, shows you a village that the middle of an August afternoon does not.

From the airports

Birmingham is the nearest big airport, about 79 kilometres by road and around an hour and a quarter's drive on a routing estimate. From Heathrow, the visitor site describes the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then the train to Moreton-in-Marsh and the 801; allow at least three and a half hours end to end. National Express coaches from Heathrow and London Victoria run to Royal Well in Cheltenham for the 801.
