Bondgate Tower (the Hotspur Gate)

About

The east gate of the medieval town walls, and the traffic on Bondgate still goes through its single arch. The listing describes it as built after 1434, around 1450, by the second Earl of Northumberland, three stages of rough ashlar with portcullis slits and a much-faded lion rampant on the east face. It is Grade I listed and a scheduled monument, and is also called the Hotspur Gate or Hotspur Tower. Look at it from the Bondgate Without side for the lion, then walk through towards the Market Place.
