Slane Historic Trail
2.2 km ·
About
A self-guided walk around the estate village with plaques and panels at each stop, starting from the Square, where the four matching Georgian corner houses face each other across the junction of Main Street and Chapel Street. It runs up Chapel Street past Rock House, the Erasmus Smith School, St Patrick's Catholic Church and the Old School, then down the N2 past the Gate Lodge, the castle gates and Millers' Row to Slane Mill on the Boyne, a mid-eighteenth-century corn mill with unusually fine carved detail for an industrial building, and back up past Johnston's Gothic Gate to St Patrick's Church of Ireland and the Conyngham Arms on Main Street. The Hill of Slane is the last stop, reached by car. Discover Boyne Valley gives the route as 2.2km and 45 minutes to an hour. The hill down to the river is steep and the N2 is a busy main road, so keep to the footpath.
