Kenmare Lace and Design Centre

← All things to do

About

Kenmare has made needlepoint lace since the 1860s, when the Poor Clare nuns established lace-making in the town as relief work, and Kenmare lace became one of the finest of the Irish laces. The Lace and Design Centre, above the town's Heritage Centre by the square, keeps the craft alive, with displays of historic and modern pieces and lace-making shown and taught by local makers. It is a small, genuine piece of the town's heritage and a good wet-weather stop. Opening is seasonal, with classes typically in summer and reduced hours in winter, so check before you visit.
