Gallarus Oratory

← All things to do

About

Gallarus Oratory is the best-preserved early-Christian church in Ireland, a small dry-stone chapel built without mortar in a corbelled boat-shape that has kept the rain out for well over a thousand years. It stands in fields near Ballydavid, about 8km northwest of Dingle, and it is genuinely remarkable up close: every stone laid to drain water outward, still watertight, still standing. The monument itself is a national monument with free public access; the private visitor centre beside it charges a small fee for parking and an exhibition, but you can reach the oratory on the public path either way.
