Boyle between Halloween and Easter
The abbey and King House close to walk-in visitors in winter. What is still open in Boyle and at Lough Key between Halloween and Easter, and what is worth timing a visit for.
Boyle's two headline attractions both close to walk-in visitors for the winter, and if you arrive in November expecting to tour King House and the abbey you will be disappointed. That does not make it a wasted trip. It makes it a different one. This is what is open between Halloween and Easter, based on the operators' own published hours at the time of writing, November 2026.
Closed, or nearly
Boyle Abbey is shut. The OPW closed it for the 2026 season on 16 September and will reopen it for the 2027 season. The 2027 date had not been published at the time of writing, so check heritageireland.ie before you plan around it.
King House runs its public tours from Easter Saturday to Halloween. Outside that window the house takes pre-booked tours only. If you are travelling as a group, it is worth contacting King House to ask.
Lough Key Boats finishes its season in September. Private speed-boat trips can still be arranged over the winter, weather permitting, but the guided cruise and rowing-boat hire are summer only.
The Lough Key campsite is open from March to October and closes for the winter; bookings for the 2027 season are already open on the park's site.
Open, and better for being quiet
The King House courtyard. The house may be closed for tours, but the courtyard behind it is not. The tea rooms keep going, Monday from nine to four and Tuesday to Saturday from nine to five, and the Boyle Craft Shop and Úna Bhán's tourist information point, Monday to Saturday from nine to five, are in the same yard. On Saturday mornings the Courtyard Market runs from ten until two all year round.
Lough Key Forest Park. The grounds and trails are open all year, and the woods are quiet in a way they never are in July. The visitor centre, the Lakeside Café, Boda Borg and the Rockingham Remembered tunnels, tower and canopy walk run Wednesday to Sunday, ten to five, from November to January. The park lists a few extra closure days over Christmas and in early January, and says it posts the latest Christmas hours on its Facebook page. Boda Borg is entirely indoors and the tour is partly underground, so both work on a wet winter day.
The cycleway. The 7.9 km route from King House to Lough Key is open all year. In winter the woodland sections can be muddy and the light goes early, so start in the morning.
The cafés and pubs. Most of the town keeps going. Ardcarne Garden Café, east of the town on the N4, is open seven days. Yomari on The Crescent opens every evening except Tuesday. Lovage at the Gate Lodge changes its hours between summer and winter, so ring or check its Facebook page before you go. Several of the old pubs on St Patrick's Street and Main Street do not open every night, so do not assume.
Worth timing a winter visit for
The Boyle Food Festival, 12 and 13 December 2026. The first edition, run by Úna Bhán Tourism in the grounds of King House, with cooking demonstrations from chefs, food experiences and a market of tastings from local producers. It is new, so watch the organisers' site for the programme.
Christmas at Lough Key. The park runs seasonal events for Easter, Halloween and Christmas, including carols for Santa. Check its events page in late November for the dates.
Getting here in winter
The Sligo line runs right through the winter, with eight trains each way on weekdays on the timetable valid from 14 December 2025; check irishrail.ie for any later revision. Note that Boyle station is staffed only on weekday daytimes and has no booking office, so buy your ticket online or from the machine. The Expressway Route 23 coach calls at Boyle on every trip. If you drive, King House parking is free and the forest-park car park costs €6, paid on exit.
Where to stay
Boyle has had no hotel since the Royal closed in 2012, so it is B&Bs, guesthouses and self-catering. Book ahead and confirm that the place is taking guests for your dates rather than relying on a listing.
