Termoncarragh Lake Nature Reserve

← All things to do

About

Termoncarragh, near Annagh Head on the western Mullet, is a BirdWatch Ireland reserve and one of the best birding spots in the northwest. It is a shallow coastal lake set in rare machair grassland, nationally important for wintering wildfowl such as whooper swans, Greenland white-fronted geese and barnacle geese, and for breeding waders in summer. The surrounding meadows are managed for corncrakes, one of Ireland's last strongholds for the species. You can view the lake from a birding board at the car park near the graveyard, though a telescope helps as the water is some distance off.
