Known locally as the Lobster Pot, McDonnell's on Lower Barrack Street is one of the best-known pubs in Erris and one of the more characterful in the west. Established in 1942, it is a turf-fire, live-music kind of place, and it doubles as the national bus stop and the local undertaker, a combination that tells you most of what you need to know about a small Atlantic town. Go for the pint and the atmosphere rather than a full menu.
