Planning a visit to Lismore: seasons, buses and where to sleep

What is open when, how to get here on the 363 without a car, and the honest answer on beds in town.

By TravelPlan.guide·

Lismore rewards a bit of planning more than most towns its size, because so much of it runs to a timetable that is not the visitor's. The castle gardens have a season, the Heritage Centre has a winter week, the town's best-known restaurant opens four days out of seven, and the nearest railway station is on the far side of a mountain. None of that is a reason not to come. It is a reason to know before you set off.

What is open when

The castle gardens and Lismore Castle Arts open daily from mid-March to late October; in 2026 that was 13 March to 25 October, 11am to 6pm with last entry at 5pm. Outside that window the castle is closed to visitors altogether, apart from the occasional booked workshop.

The Heritage Centre in the old courthouse on Main Street opens Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm, and from March to October also on Saturdays from 10am and on Sundays from noon. From November to March it is shut at weekends and on bank holiday Mondays and closes for lunch on weekdays. So a winter Saturday in Lismore has no castle and no Heritage Centre, which leaves the cathedral, the walks and the pubs.

St Carthage's Cathedral on the North Mall is open daily and free. Sunday service is at 11am.

Farmgate, on Main Street, is open Thursday to Sunday only: dinner from 5pm Thursday to Saturday, lunch on Friday and Saturday, and a menu from 1pm on Sunday. It takes bookings by email only, through its website, and answers from Wednesday to Sunday, so send the email early in the week before. Most of the town's cafés and pubs have no website at all; check their social pages for hours.

Getting here by public transport

There is no station in Lismore. The nearest as the crow flies is Cahir, about 27km north, but it is over the Knockmealdowns and no bus links the two. The workable route is through Dungarvan. From Waterford Plunkett, walk about 0.4km across the river to Waterford Bus Station and take Bus Éireann route 40, which runs roughly hourly through the day and reaches Dungarvan in about fifty minutes. From Cork, the same route 40 runs from Cork Bus Station. At Dungarvan both directions of the 40 use the Davitt's Quay stop, the same stop as TFI Local Link route 363, which takes about thirty minutes from there to Lismore through Cappoquin. On the October 2026 timetable the 363 runs about seventeen times a day each way, from early morning to late evening, with some journeys continuing west to Tallow and Fermoy.

The Lismore stop is on West Street near Station Road, about 120m from the Heritage Centre. Allow around two hours or more from Plunkett, depending on how the two buses line up, and use the TFI journey planner on the day.

By car

The N72 runs through Lismore between Dungarvan, about 25km east, and Fermoy, about 29km west, where it meets the M8 between Cork and Dublin. Cork Airport is about 65km away, an hour's drive. Parking in town is free. You will want a car, or a bicycle, for Ballysaggartmore Towers, 3.5km out on the R666, and for the Vee, 17km up the R668; no bus goes to either.

Where to stay

This is the hard part. At the time of writing we could not verify a single hotel, guesthouse or B&B in the town as trading from its own website or booking engine. Lismore House Hotel on Main Street has no working website, Ballyrafter House has been sold as a private home, and the remaining B&B listings appear only on booking aggregators. What we can point to is self-catering, and all of it is outside the town. Glenbeg House at Glencairn, about 4km west, is let whole from €675 a night with a minimum stay. Cappoquin Estate, about 6km east, has Belmont House, a farmhouse that sleeps eight from €140 a night, and off-grid cabins for two. CLIFF River Lodge at Ballyduff, about 8km upriver, is a four-bedroom fishing lodge run by Cliff House Hotel. The castle itself is let whole for groups through Celtic Castles from €48,150 for three nights. For a hotel room, Dungarvan, half an hour away by car or on the 363, is the practical base. We will add Lismore beds in the town when we can verify them.

When to come

For the gardens, April to June: the magnolias and rhododendrons in the lower garden are spring flowers, and the town's two festivals fall at the turn of May and June. The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival has announced Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci at the castle for 1 to 7 June 2027, with priority booking for its Friends from 21 November 2026 and general booking from 16 January 2027; its 2026 Don Giovanni sold out. Immrama, the festival of travel writing, runs on a June weekend and was 11 to 14 June in 2026. Book a bed in Dungarvan early for either.

For a quiet town and the castle still open, September and October. For the walks alone, any month, with boots.
