The Harbour, the Beaches, and Swimrise at The Cove

A guide to the Greystones waterfront: the rebuilt harbour and marina, the sandy South Beach and pebbly North Beach, and the daily sunrise sea-swim that defines the town.

By TravelPlan.guide·

The waterfront is the heart of Greystones, and it has two beaches and a harbour that tell the whole story of the town. The harbour was regenerated around a 230-berth marina, with a sailing club and the Harbour Plaza, and it is the busiest and best part of town for a wander, especially on a summer Sunday when the Plaza Market is on. The grey shingle that gives the town its name runs between the two beaches.

South of the harbour is South Beach, the broad sandy stretch that has held Blue Flag status every year since 2016. It is the swimming-and-sitting beach, backed by a flat coastal path that runs on south to the Kilcoole nature reserve. North of the harbour, North Beach is pebble and shingle, rougher underfoot and affected by erosion, but the better stretch for a bracing walk with Bray Head ahead of you.

The thing that really defines Greystones, though, is The Cove, the sea-swimming spot near the harbour, and swimrise: the daily ritual of locals walking down before dawn and getting into the sea whatever the season. It is tidal and the water is cold all year, so check the tide and know your limits if you join in. But standing at The Cove at first light, watching a town get into a cold sea because that is simply what it does, is the clearest way to understand the place.
