Elly Bay, on the sheltered Blacksod side of the Mullet about 9km south of Belmullet, is the peninsula's best-known strand and a Blue Flag beach. It is a long curve of pale sand on calm, clear water, popular for swimming, sailing and surfing, and backed by dunes that are important for birdlife. Because it faces into Blacksod rather than the open ocean it stays usable when the Atlantic side is too rough, which makes it the default family beach for the area.
